Urinary Incontinence Q & A

In its simplest definition, urinary incontinence is the inability to control your bladder function. There are several types of incontinence, including:

Stress incontinence
If you leak urine when you apply sudden pressure to your bladder (think sneezing and coughing), this is known as stress incontinence.

Urge incontinence
If you feel an uncontrollable urge to urinate, which can even happen after you’ve just emptied your bladder, and you’re unable to control the urge, leading to the involuntary release of urine, this is known as urge incontinence.

Mixed incontinence
If you have symptoms of both stress and urge incontinence, you have what’s known as mixed incontinence.

Women are twice as likely as men to have urinary incontinence, and the most common reasons for the problem include:

  • Weakened bladder support
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • The loss of estrogen during menopause
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Hysterectomy

Incontinence can also be brought on my neurological disorders or other existing medical conditions, but the lion’s share of the problem is attributable to age and reproduction.

Your treatment depends on the type of incontinence you have. Most women complain of stress incontinence, which your doctor can treat using innovative laser therapy that strengthens the support of your bladder. Called the MonaLisa Touch®, this noninvasive laser treatment is allowing women to regain their quality of life after childbirth or menopause.

Your OB/GYN may also recommend hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to restore tissue health to your bladder and vagina.

If your problem lies in urge incontinence, Dr. Gray and Dr. Maslyak recommend behavioral techniques and pelvic floor exercises that help you better control your urges and your bladder.

There are also a number of medications and simple procedures that can help with incontinence. Rest assured that Dr. Gray and Dr. Maslyak work tirelessly to find a solution for your urinary incontinence that allows you to take back control over your life. Often, they may use several different treatment protocols to ensure your success.
