Ultrasound

An ultrasound is a painless, diagnostic device commonly used in women’s health. The device works by sending sound waves, which come in contact with your tissues, body fluids, and bones. The waves bounce back, creating images that can be viewed on a monitor.

An ultrasound technician at Unique Wellness Center begins by applying a water-based gel to your abdomen. The gel, which may feel cool or wet, prevents air pockets from interfering with sound waves.

Your technician places a handheld device called a transducer on your skin, moving it over your stomach. The transducer transmits sound waves into your body. This process creates images, which then appear on a computer for your provider to review with you.

In certain cases, you may need an ultrasound performed inside your body. This is called a transvaginal ultrasound. Similar to a pelvic exam, you lie on your back with your feet in stirrups during this ultrasound exam as your provider inserts the slim ultrasound device in your vagina. The device sends images to screen for your provider to review with you.

Unique Wellness Center offers 4D and 5D ultrasounds. Here’s the difference between these ultrasound technologies:

4D ultrasound

This type of ultrasound produces movie-like images of your growing fetus. Because the image is very realistic, 4D ultrasounds are often called fetal photos and saved as keepsakes.

5D ultrasound

This ultrasound uses high-frequency technology to create the clearest videos and images of your growing fetus.

Unique Wellness Center recommends 5D ultrasound exams to help ensure a healthy pregnancy and delivery.

Unique Wellness Center recommends a routine ultrasound exam at about the 20th week and 34th week of pregnancy. An ultrasound allows your provider to:

  • Date the pregnancy
  • Confirm the health of the pregnancy
  • Determine the location of the fetus
  • Check the location of the placenta in relation to the cervix
  • Check for multiples
  • Look for major physical abnormalities
  • Assess fetal growth
  • Check for fetal movement and heartbeat
  • Determine the sex of the baby

Your Unique Wellness Center provider may recommend having additional ultrasounds to diagnose an issue with your pregnancy or to check on the health and position of the baby. If you need an ultrasound to diagnose a women’s health condition or because you’re pregnant, Unique Wellness Center offers the advantage of 4D and 5D ultrasounds.
