What are ovarian cysts?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on your ovaries, the two almond-shaped organs that sit on either side of your uterus and are responsible for the development and release of eggs each month.

Most women develop what is known as a functional ovarian cyst, that may be either a follicular cyst or a corpus luteum cyst.

Follicular cyst

Your ovaries form follicles to house eggs each month. When these follicles burst open the egg then travels down to your fallopian tubes for fertilization. If the follicle fails to open, it turns into a follicular cyst.

Corpus luteum cyst

After an egg is released from a follicle, the follicle collapses into something called a corpus luteum, which makes hormones to prepare your next egg for the upcoming month. Fluid can sometimes build up in this corpus luteum, creating a cyst.

There are other types of cysts, but they are extremely rare.

What are the symptoms of ovarian cysts?

Ovarian cysts typically develop during ovulation, but usually resolve without symptoms or detection. About 10% of the time, cysts can cause symptoms that include:
