What causes ovarian cysts?
Not all ovarian cysts are problematic. In fact, a majority of the time, the tiny cysts are called functional cysts and play a vital role in releasing your egg when you ovulate.
Less often, problematic cysts develop for other reasons, including:
- Hormonal issues or hormone medications
- Endometriosis
- Pregnancy
- Pelvic infections
Through a physical exam and lab tests, Dr. Halfon can pinpoint the problem and start you on a treatment plan.
What are the symptoms of ovarian cysts?
While most cysts come and go without you ever noticing them, if they grow large, you may experience:
- Abdominal or pelvic pain on the side with the cyst
- A pressure or heaviness in your abdomen
- Bloating
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, Dr. Halfon works with you to get to the bottom of the problem.
If your cyst bursts, you may feel intense pain, which may be accompanied by vomiting and fever. If this happens, you should seek medical help right away.
How are ovarian cysts treated?
Dr. Halfon first performs a pelvic examination to determine whether cysts exist, and to what extent. Then, he turns to ultrasound technology and blood tests for further information and verification.
If Dr. Halfon confirms the existence of ovarian cysts, he recommends several courses of action, which may include:
- Waiting — often, your body rids itself of small ovarian cysts on its own
- Medication — hormone medications, such as the birth control pill, will stop cysts from forming (it won’t shrink an existing cyst, however)
- Surgery — Dr. Halfon may use laparoscopic surgery to remove your cyst if it causes problems or grows
In treating ovarian cysts, Dr. Halfon works exhaustively to find the best solution for your situation. Often, Dr. Halfon starts with the least invasive procedure possible. If, however, your comfort is severely compromised by a large and growing cyst, Dr. Halfon turns to more aggressive solutions, such as surgery.
If ovarian cysts are interfering with your life, call Isaac Halfon, MD Obstetrics and Gynecology or schedule an appointment using the online booking tool.
What are ovarian cysts?
Ovarian cysts are small, fluid-filled sacs that develop in or on your ovaries, typically when you menstruate. These cysts range in size from 1-2 millimeters to four or more inches.
Ovarian cysts are very common, and most women develop unnoticeable cysts during ovulation, which typically resolve themselves. However, around 8% of women develop large cysts that require treatment.
If you fall into this category, rest assured that Dr. Halfon has extensive experience in treating the problem and relieving your pain and discomfort.
