What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition in which your endometrial lining grows outside your uterus instead of on the inside. During your ovulation cycle, the lining of your uterus thickens in anticipation of a fertilized egg. If an egg doesn’t arrive, your body sheds the lining, which causes your period.
With endometriosis, your lining prepares itself outside your uterus, often draping over whatever is nearby, including your:
- Uterus
- Fallopian tubes
- Ovaries
- Vaginal walls
- Bladder
- Rectum
When it comes time to shed the lining, it has nowhere to go, often resulting in pain. Over time, the old tissue can also create adhesions that affect your reproductive organs, hampering their ability to function correctly.
The cause of endometriosis remains a mystery, but the medical community has made advances in treating the symptoms.
What are the symptoms of endometriosis?
If you suspect you may have endometriosis, one of the most noticeable symptoms is usually pain. Outside of the pain, other symptoms include:
- Periods longer than seven days
- Heavy flow
- Painful sex
- Infertility
- Nausea and vomiting
- Urinary and bowel problems
If you’re experiencing any of these issues, Dr. Halfon performs a full pelvic examination and uses ultrasound imaging technology to determine whether endometriosis is responsible.
How is endometriosis treated?
To treat endometriosis, Dr. Halfon first sits down with you to determine how severely the condition affects you and your goals. If your symptoms aren’t severe, Dr. Halfon may recommend over-the-counter medications for pain relief and continue to vigilantly monitor your condition.
Hormonal contraceptives also provide relief by slowing your endometrial growth, but this solution isn’t a permanent fix and isn’t helpful if you’re trying to get pregnant.
If you’re having fertility problems, Dr. Halfon may recommend laparoscopic surgery to remove as much endometrial tissue as possible.
If endometriosis severely compromises your quality of life, Dr. Halfon may recommend a hysterectomy to remove your uterus entirely. Since this is an irreversible decision, Dr. Halfon helps you weigh your options and works with you on alternative solutions first.
If you’re suffering from the effects of endometriosis, call Isaac Halfon, MD Obstetrics and Gynecology to learn about the different treatment options available to you. You may also schedule a consultation using the online booking tool.
