What is a gynecologist?

Dr. Halfon understands the unique health issues you face as you travel from adolescence through menopause. During this time, your body undergoes an incredible amount of change as it prepares for the reproductive years and then begins to wind down later in life. Dr. Halfon helps you through this often-confusing journey, providing expert medical guidance and a compassionate ear throughout.

As a gynecologist, Dr. Halfon specializes in women’s health, more specifically, a woman’s reproductive health, which involves your:

  • Vagina
  • Uterus
  • Fallopian tubes
  • Ovaries
  • Breasts

Dr. Halfon’s extensive understanding of your reproductive health ensures that you receive effective intervention whenever necessary.

What does a gynecologist treat?

As a woman’s body transitions into its reproductive phase, and then back out a couple of decades later, there are many physical and biological changes to look out for.

To give you an idea of the scope and breadth of Dr. Halfon’s gynecological services, here’s a list of the most common reasons women seek treatment:

  • Heavy or abnormal bleeding
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Endometriosis
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Birth control
  • Menopause
  • Infertility

This list is by no means comprehensive. If you have an issue that’s unique to the female body, odds are Dr. Halfon can diagnose and treat the problem, or at least get you on the right track for treatment.

How often should I see a gynecologist?

Your visits with Dr. Halfon provide an excellent opportunity for Dr. Halfon to monitor your health and answer any questions or address any concerns you may have.

The best time to begin your visits is soon after your first period, which allows Dr. Halfon to establish a baseline for your health.

From there, Dr. Halfon recommends you make an annual appointment for a gynecological health and wellness exam, which typically includes:

  • Height and weight measurements
  • Blood pressure check
  • Physical exam of your vagina
  • Physical exam of your breasts
  • A rectal exam
  • A review of your abdomen through palpation

Depending on your age and circumstances, Dr. Halfon may also perform a Pap test and order a mammogram if you’re over 40.
