Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a common gynecologic complaint, accounting for one-third of outpatient visits to gynecologists. AUB has many causes. The most common sources of AUB in nonpregnant women are structural uterine pathology (eg, fibroids, endometrial polyps, adenomyosis), ovulatory dysfunction (not ovulating from age, PCOS, thyroid disorders, other), and medications. Less common is AUB related to bleeding disorders, blood-thinners, or cancers of the uterus or cervix.
Bleeding in any of the following situations is considered abnormal uterine bleeding:

• Bleeding or spotting between periods
• Bleeding or spotting after sex
• Heavy bleeding during your period
• Menstrual cycles (from day one of a bleed to day one of the next bleed) that are longer than 38 days or shorter than 24 days
• Bleeding duration longer than 9 days
• Any bleeding, even light pink or brown spotting, after menopause

Based on your symptoms or age, you may need an ultrasound, endometrial biopsy, hysteroscopy, sonohysterogram and/or an MRI/ CT scan. You may also require a pap and testing for sexually transmitted infections. Management may be medical or surgical based on symptoms and etiology.
