Pelvic Pain Q & A

Pelvic pain is felt in the lower abdomen. Many women experience pelvic pain during their monthly periods or while having sex, but it can occur at any time.

The pain can be sharp and stabbing, or more dull and throbbing. Pelvic pain can also be severe in nature, or more like a persistent discomfort.

Pelvic pain can be a sign that something is wrong with one of your reproductive organs, such as:

  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Certain types of cancer

Pelvic pain can also indicate other medical conditions, including a urinary tract infection, an intestinal disorder, or an issue with your muscle or bone tissue. Scheduling a diagnostic exam is the only way to know for sure why you’re experiencing pelvic pain.

The diagnostic process begins with a thorough discussion of your specific symptoms and overall health. Your specialist at My OB/GYN Specialists may ask you to keep a journal of your symptoms for a period of time prior to or between appointments.

A pelvic exam allows your doctor to feel for signs of abnormalities. She can also determine if you experience discomfort as she checks various areas of your pelvis.

Lab testing provides information about your immune function and can detect the presence of sexually transmitted disease or other signs of infection. You may need an ultrasound to gain more in-depth imaging of your reproductive organs.

In some cases, a CT scan or MRI is needed to look for growths or other abnormalities. If these efforts are not sufficient to reach a diagnosis, you may need to undergo laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure that provides a real-time view of your organs and tissues.

Your treatment path depends on the nature and cause of your pelvic pain. Your specialist works with you to decide on various treatment options.
Medications can help address some types of pelvic pain, especially those caused by hormonal imbalance. If an infection is present, antibiotics can help. Some women find that antidepressants are a good treatment option for managing chronic pain.

Additional treatment options include physical therapy, trigger point injections, psychotherapy, or neurostimulation. Surgical intervention is also an option, but should be reserved for cases where other treatments prove ineffective.

To determine the source of your pelvic pain and find relief with effective treatment options, schedule a consultation with My OB/GYN Specialists today.
