Ultrasound Q & A

An ultrasound is a noninvasive test that uses sound waves to generate an image of the inside of your body, or of your growing baby.

There are two types of ultrasounds:

  • Transabdominal: ultrasound wand is placed on your abdomen
  • Transvaginal: ultrasound wand is placed in your vagina

The team will let you know the type of ultrasound you need, which may depend on why you need the procedure.
The test is safe and generally requires very little preparation — although in some cases, the physicians at My OB/GYN Specialists may request that you drink water before the test.

The 3D and 4D ultrasound — which is most often used during pregnancy — is a single procedure that generates detailed images and videos of your baby. The 3D part creates a still image, while the 4D part allows you to see your baby move in real time. In majority of cases, 3D/4D is not used for medical purposes. However, My OB/GYN Specialists offers this elective procedure to patients at affordable rates.

Beyond pregnancy application, 3D ultrasounds are also utilized to in gynecologic services.

When you’re pregnant, the ultrasound test is an exciting and emotional experience and these specialized ultrasounds allow you to see your baby’s face for the first time.

Unlike the 2D, or “traditional,” ultrasound — which allows your doctor at My OB/GYN Specialists to examine your baby’s internal organs and bones during pregnancy — the 3D ultrasound fills in the skin so you get to see your baby’s features with more detail.

The team at My OB/GYN Specialists uses these detailed images to check on the health of your baby, as well as to identify birth defects — such as a cleft palate — which you can’t see on a traditional ultrasound.

The number of ultrasounds you need may depend on your pregnancy. In general, the team at My OB/GYN Specialists may recommend an ultrasound during each trimester.

Ultrasounds are done to:

  • Confirm pregnancy and position
  • Evaluate structure and identify abnormalities
  • Monitor growth
  • Identify uterine or pelvic abnormalities that may affect pregnancy or delivery

The team of female healthcare professionals at My OB/GYN Specialists also uses ultrasounds to evaluate your reproductive system and pelvic region when you’re not pregnant.

The team may recommend an ultrasound to diagnose or treat:

  • Fibroids or polyps
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Abnormalities of your reproductive organs
  • Ectopic pregnancy or pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Position of your intrauterine device (IUD)

The team may also recommend an ultrasound to assist in conducting an endometrial biopsy.

After your ultrasound, the team discusses the findings with you immediately, so there’s no waiting or worrying.
