Preterm Labor Care
in Boca Raton and Boynton, FL
Preterm labor is labor that occurs before 37 weeks of pregnancy. It is a leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality. The preterm labor signs include regular contractions, which may be felt in the lower abdomen or back, pelvic pressure, cramping, and/or a change in vaginal discharge. These symptoms can be mistaken for Braxton Hicks contractions, which are normal and do not signal labor. Therefore, it is important to seek medical attention if you suspect preterm labor.
The treatment for preterm labor varies depending on the gestational age of the fetus and the severity of the symptoms. If preterm labor signs are detected early, and the cervix is not yet dilated, a woman may be given medications, such as terbutaline or nifedipine, to stop or slow contractions. Bed rest and hydration may also be recommended. In some cases, a woman may need to be hospitalized and given corticosteroids to help mature the fetus’s lungs.
Preterm Birth
In cases where preterm birth is inevitable and the baby is not mature enough, delivery will be planned as early as possible. The baby will be closely monitored and receive appropriate care in the neonatal intensive care unit. It’s important to note that preventing preterm birth is much more effective than trying to stop it once it has begun. Good prenatal care and addressing underlying risk factors such as infection, high blood pressure, and smoking can significantly reduce the likelihood of preterm labor.
