Biophysical Profile
in Boca Raton & Boynton, FL
A biophysical profile (BPP) is a prenatal test that combines ultrasound with a non-stress test (NST) to assess the well-being of a fetus. The ultrasound portion of the test is used to assess the fetus’s movements, muscle tone, amniotic fluid levels, and breathing. The non-stress test portion of the test measures the fetal heart rate in response to fetal movement.
The biophysical profile score provides an overall assessment of the fetus’s well-being. It is often used to assess the fetus’s health when there are concerns, such as a high-risk pregnancy or when the mother is past her due date.
Prenatal Screening Test
Prenatal screening is different from the biophysical profile since the prenatal screening test is used to assess the risk of certain chromosomal disorders, such as Down syndrome or birth defects in a developing fetus. These tests are usually performed during the first or second trimesters of pregnancy and include nuchal translucency, quad test, etc., which can be combined with blood tests and/or ultrasound. Their results are used to determine whether more invasive diagnostic testing, such as amniocentesis, should be performed.
