Advanced Maternal Age
Advanced maternal age refers to women 35 years or older at the time of delivery. As a woman ages, her chances of certain pregnancy-related complications increase. Some of the older women’s pregnancy risks include an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus, such as Down syndrome, as well as an increased risk of complications during pregnancy and delivery, such as gestational diabetes, hypertension, and pre-eclampsia. Additionally, older mothers may be more likely to have a pregnancy loss or stillbirth and may be at an increased risk of cesarean delivery. However, it’s important to note that many women have a healthy pregnancy over 35 and deliver healthy babies at an advanced maternal age.
Treatments for pregnancy in advanced age
It’s also important to point out that the term “advanced maternal age” is not a definitive measure of fertility. Age alone is not considered a limiting factor in terms of maternal health, and just like with any other health concern, good prenatal care and consideration of other factors, such as overall health, can significantly mitigate potential older women’s pregnancy risks. Also, some women may consider assisted reproductive technology (ART) options like IVF, IUI, and others when it comes to pregnancy over 35.
