What Is a Yeast Infection?
Candidiasis, more commonly known as a yeast infection, is a vaginal infection caused by bacterial and yeast overgrowth.
Yeast infection symptoms include:
- Itching and burning
- Swelling and redness
- Whitish, thick discharge
- Painful sexual intercourse
Most cases of yeast infections resolve within a few days with appropriate medical attention. However, yeast infection symptoms may worsen when ignored, and therapy may take longer.
Common Yeast Infection Causes
A wide variety of factors can trigger yeast infections. Hormones are a common issue since they alter the vaginal PH balance. This can happen during pregnancy, as well as breastfeeding, menopause, or while using birth control. Antibiotics and douching could also cause an infection.
Yeast infections are not considered STDs, but they can still be spread during sexual activity without proper protection.
Those with weakened immune systems or diabetes are more prone to yeast infections. You may get a secondary yeast infection if you already have an underlying health condition.
Yeast Infection Treatment
Antifungal drugs, both OTC and prescription, may be sufficient to treat mild yeast infections if used as directed for 1, 3, or 7 days. The treatment might range from minimally invasive to somewhat extensive, depending on how severe a yeast infection is. Due to the risk of mild burning or irritation from some treatments and the oil content of suppositories and creams, those who typically use latex condoms or diaphragms will need to find an alternative means of contraception for the duration of their yeast infection treatment.
Treatment for severe yeast infections generally lasts between 7 and 14 days. A single oral dose of fluconazole is sufficient for treating minor infections; for more complex disorders, however, you may need to take it for two or three days in a row. In severe cases, it may be necessary to implement a maintenance strategy for yeast infections.
