Everyone deserves glowing skin that is beautiful and healthy. While it might seem hard to maintain an even complexion, many innovative techniques are designed to make it easier. One of the most popular techniques today is dermaplaning. From removing peach fuzz to exfoliating dead skin cells, here is what you should know about dermablading and dermaplaning benefits.
What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning, also known as dermablading, is a treatment typically performed on facial skin. Trained professionals, estheticians, use a dermaplaning blade designed to smooth along the surface of the skin. This blade is very thin and precise. As you receive your treatment, dead skin cells and fine hairs on the surface of your face will be removed.
What Are Some Dermaplaning Benefits?
Dermaplaning is a gentle, painless procedure that leaves you with skin that glows from the inside out. The dermaplaning benefits are generally most pronounced for those with:
- Sun damage or sun spots
- Dull skin
- Dry, flaking skin
- Acne scarring
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Fine hairs on the face
The dermaplaning blade removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells that sit on the surface of your skin until you exfoliate them away. In many ways, dermablading is a more intensive but gentle form of exfoliation than you would get at home through a chemical exfoliator or skin scrub.
It also smooths the skin surface by removing peach fuzz, excess oils, and any surface irregularities. The dermaplane process will leave you with better results when applying make-up, so it’s also a great idea before weddings and other important events.
Does the Dermaplaning Blade Hurt?
The biggest concern many people have before a dermaplaning appointment is whether or not the dermaplaning blade will hurt or cut the skin. The esthetician performing your procedure will clean your face and the blade before beginning. The procedure is completely safe.
The blade is very thin, and experienced dermaplane providers understand the right amount of pressure to apply to remove peach fuzz without nicking the skin’s surface. You should not experience pain at any point during the process, and there are very few side effects. At most, your skin may tingle where the blade removed the top layer of the skin or be slightly red due to friction.
What Happens During Dermaplaning?
At your dermablading appointment, your provider will start by discussing your skin concerns and existing skincare regimen with you. This confirms that the procedure won’t conflict with any other practices you have and that your concerns like peach fuzz are addressed properly. Dermaplaning generally takes about 30 minutes and can be added to any facial or Hydrafacial procedure.
After the dermaplane process is done, your skin will be cleansed to remove any baby hairs, oil, or dead skin cells that are still sitting on the surface. A moisturizer or soothing cream is applied to soothe any redness or irritation. Finally, your provider will apply a thin layer of sunscreen to protect the sensitive, new skin exposed due to exfoliation.
Is It the Same as Dermabrasion?
While the name is similar to microdermabrasion and dermabrasion, key differences separate the two. Both of them exfoliate the skin’s surface to promote skin health and make your face feel soft and smooth. However, the tools and techniques used are not the same.
Microdermabrasion uses a scrub-like substance spread across the face and a tool to exfoliate the top layer of skin. It has many of the same benefits as if a blade is used, including reducing scarring and easing the visible signs of sun damage. The microcrystals used are designed to be safe for thin and delicate facial skin, and they effectively get rid of dead skin cells.
In contrast, during dermaplaning, a thin, scalpel-like tool is used as an alternative to microcrystals and a vacuum. Instead of using friction to remove dead skin cells, the practitioner will carefully run the blade along the surface. Because a blade is being used, dermaplaning removes fine hairs and not just skin. Many people love the after-effects of both procedures, but dermaplaning is preferred when you also have hair you’d like removed.
How Long Do Dermaplaning Results Last?
The results of dermaplaning are most obvious right away. Because the procedure is so gentle, you can return to your daily life immediately. It’s normal for your skin to feel sensitive for a few hours after the process, especially if you did not exfoliate for a while beforehand.
Unlike more intensive forms of exfoliation, epiblading will give you smooth, glowing skin for approximately three weeks. Wear sunscreen and moisturize carefully to extend the effects as long as possible. A sunburn or poor skin care can reverse the positive effects you experienced.
How Do You Prepare for Epiblading?
You should follow your normal skincare routine in the days before your procedure. Avoid exfoliating beforehand. If you have acne and have open sores or a significant amount of activity on your face, you might need to push your appointment back until the flare-up has eased. While the blade is thin and safe, it can reopen sores or lead to greater skin irritation. If you have sunburn, you should also reschedule your appointment. Discontinue any glycolic or salicylic acids and retinol 2 to 3 days before your appointment.
