Uterine Fibroids Treatment
in Coral Spring, Florida
What are uterine fibroids?
Uterine fibroids, medically known as myomas, are noncancerous growths in your uterus that can range in size from a small seed up to a grapefruit. Most women develop fibroids during their reproductive years between the ages of 25 and 35, but the growths usually don’t present any problems.
When they do cause problems, it’s because the fibroids have grown too large or too numerous, interfering with your reproductive system. Not to mention, these growths can cause severe discomfort and pain depending on their size and location.
What causes uterine fibroids?
Medical researchers haven’t identified a cause of uterine fibroids, but they believe that heredity and hormones may play a role. Fibroids are responsive to hormones, which is why they develop during your reproductive years and shrink after menopause.
Also, specific factors increase your risk, including:
- Race: African American women are more prone to fibroids
- Use of birth control
- Obesity
- Vitamin D deficiency
What are the symptoms of uterine fibroids?
The most common symptoms of uterine fibroids include:
- Heavy bleeding during your period
- Longer-than-normal periods
- Pressure in your pelvic region
- Difficulty emptying your bladder
- Constipation
- Frequent urination
- Backache
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to have Dr. Barrionuevo take a look.
How are uterine fibroids treated?
To determine whether fibroids cause your discomfort, Dr. Barrionuevo performs an extensive evaluation, which includes reviewing your symptoms and your medical history. He then conducts a physical examination and may turn to ultrasound or an MRI to see what’s going on inside.
If he confirms that you have problematic fibroids, there are several treatment options, including:
- Medications to regulate your hormones
- Noninvasive procedures to destroy fibroid tissue
- Laparoscopic surgery
Dr. Barrionuevo typically starts out conservatively when treating fibroids and only resorts to stronger measures should your fibroids prove resistant to treatment and continue to cause you discomfort.
To find relief from the pain and other symptoms fibroids can cause, call Coral Springs OBGYN or use the online scheduling tool to arrange an appointment.

Dr. Barrionuevo was absolutely amazing! First of all, his office is immaculate and very comfortable. He has a TV in each exam room and the waiting room, which made visits a little less drab. He also has an ultrasound machine in every room, so I got to see and hear my baby on EVERY visit. The ladies at check-in/check-out, as well as the nurse, are helpful and kind…they learned my name and made my visits personable from beginning to end. I delivered my son during the COVID-19 Pandemic. He reassured me through a very anxious time and made my pregnancy as enjoyable as it could have been. He was prompt, calm, patient and encouraging during my delivery. Overall…a 10 out of 10! I would recommend him to anyone who might be expecting!

Dr Barrionuevo saw me first during my first trimester of pregnancy. I’m so glad I chose him to treat me during this time. He is by far the best OBGYN ever and I have two other kids. He is patient, caring and takes the time to explain everything in details so you are left with a peace of mind. He delivered our daughter on 8/22 and again the level of professionalism and caring disposition is nothing more than amazing. I would recommend him to everyone. The staff is also amazing: Grace, Liliana and Sonia. My prenatal appointments was always pleasant. More doctors need to strive to be like him as he is the epitome of what world class is. Thanks for everything Dr. B and Staff.
