STD Testing & Treatments
in Coral Spring, Florida
What are the most common STDs?
In 2015, the Centers for Disease Control released a report outlining some statistics on the most common STDs in the United States, and here’s how the numbers broke out:
- Human papillomavirus (HPV): at least 80% of sexually active Americans are infected with HPV at some in their lives
- Genital herpes: one in eight people between the ages of 14 and 49 have genital herpes
- Chlamydia: 1.5 million cases were reported in 2015
- Gonorrhea: almost 400,000 cases were reported
- Hepatitis: the CDC estimates that 850,000 Americans have hepatitis B
- HIV: approximately 1.1 million people in the US have HIV, although one in seven are unaware of the infection
This quick snapshot gives you an idea of the prevalence of STDs in the US, but even these numbers are only estimates, as many people with STDs go undiagnosed.
Why should I be tested for STDs?
There are several reasons why you should receive STD testing, including:
Early detection
By undergoing regular screening, Dr. Barrionuevo treats the disease before it becomes a more significant problem. Some STDs can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease or fertility problems if left unchecked. In extreme cases, such as with HPV, untreated infections can turn cancerous.
Stop the spread
Whether or not you display any symptoms, you can still pass the infection on to others.
What should I be tested for and how often?
The following testing schedule is one the CDC recommends for women:
- Test at least once for HIV between ages 13 and 64
- Annual screenings for chlamydia and gonorrhea for sexually active women under 25
- Syphilis, HIV, and hepatitis B screening for all pregnant women
During your routine visits with Dr. Barrionuevo, he conducts a Pap test, which tests for precancerous cells on your cervix caused by HPV.
The bottom line is that everyone is different and you should discuss your lifestyle with Dr. Barrionuevo so he can come up with an appropriate screening schedule.

Dr. Barrionuevo was absolutely amazing! First of all, his office is immaculate and very comfortable. He has a TV in each exam room and the waiting room, which made visits a little less drab. He also has an ultrasound machine in every room, so I got to see and hear my baby on EVERY visit. The ladies at check-in/check-out, as well as the nurse, are helpful and kind…they learned my name and made my visits personable from beginning to end. I delivered my son during the COVID-19 Pandemic. He reassured me through a very anxious time and made my pregnancy as enjoyable as it could have been. He was prompt, calm, patient and encouraging during my delivery. Overall…a 10 out of 10! I would recommend him to anyone who might be expecting!

Dr Barrionuevo saw me first during my first trimester of pregnancy. I’m so glad I chose him to treat me during this time. He is by far the best OBGYN ever and I have two other kids. He is patient, caring and takes the time to explain everything in details so you are left with a peace of mind. He delivered our daughter on 8/22 and again the level of professionalism and caring disposition is nothing more than amazing. I would recommend him to everyone. The staff is also amazing: Grace, Liliana and Sonia. My prenatal appointments was always pleasant. More doctors need to strive to be like him as he is the epitome of what world class is. Thanks for everything Dr. B and Staff.
