Prenatal Care & High Risk Pregnancy
in Coral Spring, Florida
Why do I need prenatal care?
You receive prenatal care during your pregnancy to ensure the health of both you and your baby. Prenatal care is critical, because it allows Dr. Barrionuevo to monitor your baby’s development, ensuring that critical milestones are met. He also observes your health alongside the development of your baby.
This type of care allows Dr. Barrionuevo to detect potential problems and mitigate them before they become severe.
During a typical prenatal care visit, Dr. Barrionuevo records your vital statistics and measurements to track your health and the baby’s growth. He also uses this time to give you valuable counsel on nutrition and exercise throughout your pregnancy.
During your second trimester, Dr. Barrionuevo performs an ultrasound, which provides you with the first glimpse of your baby (or babies), and you can find out the sex.
What is a typical prenatal care schedule?
A typical prenatal schedule goes like this:
- Once a month during weeks 4-28
- Twice a month during weeks 28-36
- Once a week after week 36
If something arises during your pregnancy, you may have to increase this schedule.
What is a high-risk pregnancy?
Being placed in the high-risk pregnancy category isn’t necessarily cause for alarm. Many of the criteria for this category are beyond your control, such as:
- Advanced maternal age (over 35)
- Multiple babies
- Pre-existing medical condition, such as high blood pressure or diabetes
- History of miscarriage
If you fall into the high-risk group, you should expect to see Dr. Barrionuevo more often, since he needs to monitor your pregnancy more closely. He may also order more tests during your pregnancy, such as amniocentesis.
There are also times when your pregnancy begins normally, but you end up in the high-risk group because of complications, such as preeclampsia or gestational diabetes.
Coral Springs OBGYN has on-site sonography equipment, so Dr. Barrionuevo can provide same-day ultrasounds should they be necessary.
Whether your pregnancy is high risk or not, call Coral Springs OBGYN to get started on your prenatal care as soon as possible. Or use the online scheduling tool to book an appointment.

Dr. Barrionuevo was absolutely amazing! First of all, his office is immaculate and very comfortable. He has a TV in each exam room and the waiting room, which made visits a little less drab. He also has an ultrasound machine in every room, so I got to see and hear my baby on EVERY visit. The ladies at check-in/check-out, as well as the nurse, are helpful and kind…they learned my name and made my visits personable from beginning to end. I delivered my son during the COVID-19 Pandemic. He reassured me through a very anxious time and made my pregnancy as enjoyable as it could have been. He was prompt, calm, patient and encouraging during my delivery. Overall…a 10 out of 10! I would recommend him to anyone who might be expecting!

Dr Barrionuevo saw me first during my first trimester of pregnancy. I’m so glad I chose him to treat me during this time. He is by far the best OBGYN ever and I have two other kids. He is patient, caring and takes the time to explain everything in details so you are left with a peace of mind. He delivered our daughter on 8/22 and again the level of professionalism and caring disposition is nothing more than amazing. I would recommend him to everyone. The staff is also amazing: Grace, Liliana and Sonia. My prenatal appointments was always pleasant. More doctors need to strive to be like him as he is the epitome of what world class is. Thanks for everything Dr. B and Staff.
