What is a hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is a procedure wherein Dr. Barrionuevo removes all, or part of, your uterus. There are several types of hysterectomies, including:
Partial hysterectomy
In this procedure, Dr. Barrionuevo only needs to remove the top portion of your uterus.
Total hysterectomy
Dr. Barrionuevo removes your entire uterus, including your cervix.
Radical hysterectomy
This type of hysterectomy is typically reserved for cases where cancer is present, which warrants the removal of your uterus, your cervix, the top part of your vagina, and surrounding tissue.
Depending on your situation, Dr. Barrionuevo may remove your ovaries and your fallopian tubes during your hysterectomy.
Why would I need a hysterectomy?
Since removing your uterus ends your ability to bear children, the procedure the last resort when other treatments have failed. The most common reasons why women opt for a hysterectomy include:
- Painful uterine fibroids
- Uterine prolapse
- Endometriosis
- Abnormal or heavy bleeding
- Adenomyosis, which is a painful problem with the growth of the lining of your uterus
- Cancer
How is a hysterectomy performed?
When it comes to hysterectomies, Dr. Barrionuevo uses the latest laparoscopic techniques whenever possible. This means that he makes only tiny incisions in your lower abdomen, through which he threads a lighted camera and small instruments to do the work.
This minimally invasive procedure means that you have less risk of infection, as well as less collateral tissue damage than with traditional open surgery.
In some cases, Dr. Barrionuevo can avoid making any incisions on the surface of your skin and performs the surgery through your vagina.
Every case is different, and Dr. Barrionuevo sits down with you beforehand to discuss the different techniques and which ones are best for your situation.
It’s worth noting that, in all cases, after Dr. Barrionuevo removes your uterus, you will no longer have periods, which may be the goal of your hysterectomy in the first place. If your ovaries remain intact, you won’t enter menopause right away, but you’ll likely make this transition earlier than most women. If Dr. Barrionuevo removes your ovaries, you will enter menopause immediately after the procedure.

Dr. Barrionuevo was absolutely amazing! First of all, his office is immaculate and very comfortable. He has a TV in each exam room and the waiting room, which made visits a little less drab. He also has an ultrasound machine in every room, so I got to see and hear my baby on EVERY visit. The ladies at check-in/check-out, as well as the nurse, are helpful and kind…they learned my name and made my visits personable from beginning to end. I delivered my son during the COVID-19 Pandemic. He reassured me through a very anxious time and made my pregnancy as enjoyable as it could have been. He was prompt, calm, patient and encouraging during my delivery. Overall…a 10 out of 10! I would recommend him to anyone who might be expecting!

Dr Barrionuevo saw me first during my first trimester of pregnancy. I’m so glad I chose him to treat me during this time. He is by far the best OBGYN ever and I have two other kids. He is patient, caring and takes the time to explain everything in details so you are left with a peace of mind. He delivered our daughter on 8/22 and again the level of professionalism and caring disposition is nothing more than amazing. I would recommend him to everyone. The staff is also amazing: Grace, Liliana and Sonia. My prenatal appointments was always pleasant. More doctors need to strive to be like him as he is the epitome of what world class is. Thanks for everything Dr. B and Staff.
