Endometriosis & Pelvic Pain Specialist in Coral Springs, Florida
What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is when the lining of your uterus grows on the outside, often draping itself over nearby organs, such as the:
- Fallopian tubes
- Ovaries
- Tissue along the walls of your pelvis
The problem lies in the fact that this tissue acts as it usually would inside your uterus. That means it thickens in anticipation of a fertilized egg each month and then attempts to shed when one doesn’t arrive.
When your lining is outside your uterus, however, it has nowhere to go. As the lining goes through this cycle over and over, scar tissue and adhesions can form, obstructing your organs and causing you pain.
What are the symptoms of endometriosis?
The most common symptoms of endometriosis include:
- Painful periods
- Pain during intercourse
- Pain during bowel movements
- Abnormal bleeding, including excessive bleeding during your period
- Fatigue
- Infertility
The severity of these symptoms varies from one woman to the next. Some women aren’t even aware they have endometriosis, while others suffer debilitating pain.
What causes endometriosis?
Medical researchers are unclear as to what causes endometriosis. They have, however, identified specific risk factors, including:
- Never giving birth
- Early onset of your menstrual cycle
- Higher levels of estrogen
- Heredity
- Uterine irregularities
- Low body fat levels
How is endometriosis treated?
When it comes to treating your endometriosis, Dr. Barrionuevo strives to find a treatment that complements your goals.
For example, one possible treatment is hormone therapy, which can alleviate the pain and discomfort of endometriosis, but it’s not a great option if you’re trying to get pregnant.
In these cases, Dr. Barrionuevo may use laparoscopic surgery to remove the adhesions and extra tissue to facilitate your chances of getting pregnant. However, your endometriosis can return afterward. Should this occur, he may recommend exploring other avenues, such as in vitro fertilization.
Ultimately, how Dr. Barrionuevo treats your endometriosis depends upon the severity of your symptoms and your goals. Rest assured, he works with you to come up with a treatment plan that addresses both.

Dr. Barrionuevo was absolutely amazing! First of all, his office is immaculate and very comfortable. He has a TV in each exam room and the waiting room, which made visits a little less drab. He also has an ultrasound machine in every room, so I got to see and hear my baby on EVERY visit. The ladies at check-in/check-out, as well as the nurse, are helpful and kind…they learned my name and made my visits personable from beginning to end. I delivered my son during the COVID-19 Pandemic. He reassured me through a very anxious time and made my pregnancy as enjoyable as it could have been. He was prompt, calm, patient and encouraging during my delivery. Overall…a 10 out of 10! I would recommend him to anyone who might be expecting!

Dr Barrionuevo saw me first during my first trimester of pregnancy. I’m so glad I chose him to treat me during this time. He is by far the best OBGYN ever and I have two other kids. He is patient, caring and takes the time to explain everything in details so you are left with a peace of mind. He delivered our daughter on 8/22 and again the level of professionalism and caring disposition is nothing more than amazing. I would recommend him to everyone. The staff is also amazing: Grace, Liliana and Sonia. My prenatal appointments was always pleasant. More doctors need to strive to be like him as he is the epitome of what world class is. Thanks for everything Dr. B and Staff.
