Fertility Clinic in Coral Gables, FL
Dr. Armando Hernandez-Rey offers safe options for women who want to freeze their eggs to preserve their fertility. With new technology that freezes eggs very quickly, called vitrification, doctors can achieve a 70% to 80% fertilization rate with thawed eggs. This success rate is now similar to fresh eggs. This is one of the most exciting developments in the fertility arena, as it offers patients more choices than ever before. And gives women more control over their fertility and their lives.
There are many reasons why a woman may want to freeze her eggs (a process known as cryopreservation) for future use. The most common reason is her age. Women are born with a set number of eggs. As all women age, the number and quality of eggs decrease, especially after the age of 35. Many women are now opting to freeze their eggs in their late 20s or early 30s before this decline in the quality of their eggs. This gives them the freedom to advance their education or career, or to simply find the right partner. For egg freezing, younger is generally better because a woman’s egg quality decreases with age. That said, we see many women have success freezing later- in their late 30s and 40s.
There are other medical reasons to freeze your eggs as well. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy for cancer can damage your eggs, so discussing fertility preservation with your oncologist is important. Our doctors work closely with many oncologists to coordinate the process. If you have been diagnosed with cancer, we will see you the same day to start fertility preservation treatment without delaying your cancer care. Certain conditions may also prevent a woman from having a functional uterus. Some women have to have their ovaries or uterus removed before they have had a child. For these women, harvesting her eggs for future use themselves or with a surrogate allows them the opportunity to have a biological child of their own. Endometriosis or ovarian cysts, for example, may require a woman to have her ovaries removed.
When you are ready to get pregnant, we will thaw the eggs and complete the IVF process, which involves taking progesterone to thicken the uterine wall and transferring one or two healthy fertilized eggs (embryos) into your uterus.
Not sure if freezing is right for you? We also offer ovarian reserve testing with our partner Egg-Q, whose website offers great information about your ovarian reserve and the egg freezing process and its costs.
Of course, the cost is a great concern to most of our patients. We have negotiated exclusive contracts to offer our patients large savings on the fertility medications- a great portion of the total cost of freezing your eggs. In addition, we offer bundled packages and work with many financing companies to help our patients achieve their goal of freezing their eggs.
Fertility preservation is a suitable option for many women, especially if there are medical reasons to delay pregnancy.
