We realize that the prospect of gynecological surgery can be disconcerting. That’s why we first listen to your concerns and thoroughly explain your treatment so that you understand what it entails.

Throughout the process, we provide caring support because your health, comfort, and well-being are our number one priority. Our doctors perform surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center, either as inpatient or outpatient surgery.

A hysterectomy is a procedure to remove the uterus and cervix. It may be performed as a treatment for cancer, including endometrial (uterine) cancer, precervical cancer, cervical cancer, and ovarian cancer, as well as uterine fibroids, uterine prolapse, endometriosis, and heavy bleeding.

The fallopian tubes and ovaries may also be removed. This is called a BSO (bilateral Salpingo-oophorectomy).

A hysterectomy may be performed through an incision in your abdomen or vagina. It can also be done laparoscopically, which is a minimally invasive procedure that requires a few small incisions in your lower abdomen.

A laparoscope is a type of endoscope used to view the internal female reproductive organs (uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries). It consists of a long, thin tube with a light and viewing instrument. Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgery that may be performed to both diagnose and treat a number of conditions.

Our gynecologic surgeons may recommend a diagnostic laparoscopy when they need to view your reproductive organs in order to rule out or confirm a diagnosis of ovarian cysts, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ectopic pregnancy (the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus), pelvic floor disorders (such as urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse), blocked fallopian tubes, and cancer. If necessary, they can also treat these conditions during surgery.

Doctors can also perform a hysterectomy and tubal ligation (getting your fallopian tubes tied to prevent pregnancy) laparoscopically.

Laparoscopic surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis and requires only a few small incisions in your abdomen.

Myomectomy is a procedure to remove uterine fibroids (also called myomas), a common condition in women. While benign, these tissue masses can cause symptoms such as heavy or long periods, abdominal or back pain (especially during sex), constipation, and frequent or difficult urination. They may also be a cause of infertility or miscarriage.

The surgery may be performed using a large “open” incision in the abdomen or using a laparoscope and small incisions. The uterus is left intact.

Polyps are another type of benign tissue mass in the uterus. They are one of the most common causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women.

Our doctors can diagnose and remove uterine polyps using a hysteroscope, a long, thin instrument used to view the inside of the uterus. It is inserted through the vagina, so there are no incisions involved.

Tubal ligation is a sterilization procedure for women who are certain they don’t want a future pregnancy. Commonly known as “getting your tubes tied,” this permanent form of birth control involves blocking the fallopian tubes to prevent eggs from traveling to the uterus and coming into contact with sperm.
The tubes may be blocked in several ways: they may be cut, tied, cauterized, or sealed off with plastic rings or clips. We currently recommend removing the tube entirely (salpingectomy) rather than simply blocking it, as experts feel this lowers the risk for a future ovarian cancer which is thought to sometimes start in the tube. The procedure is typically done via laparoscopy on an outpatient basis. This can also be done at the time of cesarean section if desired.

Endometrial ablation is a procedure to reduce heavy or abnormal uterine bleeding or eliminate one’s period entirely. It is a nonsurgical alternative to hysterectomy.

In our practice we use NovaSure®, which gently destroys the lining of the uterus with precise amounts of radiofrequency energy. The doctor inserts a wand-like device through the vagina into the uterus to administer the electrical energy, so there are no incisions involved.

We perform NovaSure in the comfort of our office in a matter of minutes. The procedure is only for premenopausal women who are done with childbearing.

Stress incontinence is urine leakage that occurs when you strain yourself laughing, coughing, sneezing, exercising, or lifting things. Vaginal sling procedures are used to help control this condition.

The procedure involves creating a sling from your own tissue or synthetic material (usually mesh) to help close the urethra and bladder neck to prevent urine leakage. The sling is either passed under your urethra — which carries urine from the bladder — and bladder neck or attached to the strong tissues in the lower belly and left in place allowing your body to heal around the sling and incorporate it into your tissue.

Our Services

Gynecology

The field of medicine that takes care of women is gynecology, and it differs from obstetrics because it only treats women who are not pregnant. Gynecology encompasses numerous examinations, tests, and screenings that are all designed to detect health issues that can significantly affect a woman’s reproductive health and well-being.

Obstetrics

Obstetrics is a field of medicine that deals with pregnancy and giving birth. Many years ago, it was common for women to give birth at home, but since medicine has advanced so much we now have an array of staff and birth clinics ready to welcome you and make sure your baby is delivered in a safe, comforting environment.
