Ask the Expert: Common Questions About Women’s Health

Gynecology (GYN) Questions

You should schedule a well-woman exam every year. While you may only need a Pap smear every 3 to 5 years depending on your age and history, your annual visit is crucial for overall preventive care. It includes a clinical breast exam, pelvic exam, and a comprehensive discussion about your health—from menstrual pain and birth control to menopause symptoms and mental well-being. It is your dedicated time to address any concerns with your gynecologist.

While urinary incontinence is very common, especially after childbirth or during menopause, it is not something you have to live with. Leaking urine when you laugh, cough, or sneeze is known as stress incontinence. As a fellowship-trained urogynecologist, Dr. Toussaint specializes in diagnosing and treating pelvic floor disorders. We offer a range of solutions, from pelvic floor physical therapy referrals to advanced, minimally invasive treatments like the Fotona laser, to help you regain control and confidence.

If you are soaking through a pad or tampon every hour, experiencing pelvic pressure, or having periods that last longer than a week, uterine fibroids could be the cause. Fibroids are benign growths in the uterus and are particularly common, especially among African American women. You do not have to suffer through severe pain or heavy bleeding. We offer comprehensive evaluations and modern, minimally invasive surgical options, including robotic myomectomy, to treat fibroids with faster recovery times.

Obstetrics (OB) Questions

We recommend scheduling your first prenatal visit around 8 weeks after your last menstrual period. During this crucial first appointment, we will confirm your pregnancy with an ultrasound, establish your estimated due date, review your medical history, and discuss essential prenatal vitamins and nutrition. Early and consistent prenatal care is the best way to ensure a healthy pregnancy for both you and your baby.

A pregnancy may be considered high-risk due to factors such as advanced maternal age (over 35), carrying multiples (twins or triplets), or pre-existing health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or thyroid disorders. Yes, we provide expert, compassionate care for high-risk pregnancies. We monitor you and your baby closely with advanced diagnostics and personalized care plans to ensure the safest possible outcome.

Yes! We are proud to offer our exclusive PlayTime™ 3D/4D Ultrasound experience. This allows you to see your baby’s features in incredible detail and bond with your little one before they are even born. It is a wonderful, memorable experience for expectant parents, performed right here in our comfortable Ocoee office.
